Better Tax Decisions Begin Before Tax Season

Tax preparation looks backward, reporting income and financial transactions that have already occurred. Tax planning looks forward, helping you understand the tax consequences of important decisions before you make them.

At PIM Tax Services, we believe effective tax planning involves more than searching for deductions. It requires understanding your financial circumstances, anticipating changes, and evaluating how federal and state tax laws may affect your decisions.

Whether you’re approaching retirement, selling a property, starting a business, experiencing a significant change in income, or navigating the tax implications of military service, proactive planning can help you make more informed decisions.

Our goal is simple: Help you understand your options, anticipate your tax obligations, and make financial decisions with greater confidence.

Major Income Changes & Retirement

Retirement, a significant change in compensation, or a large retirement account distribution can create unexpected tax consequences.

We help clients evaluate withholding, estimated tax payments, retirement distributions, Roth conversions, and other decisions that may affect their current and future tax obligations.

Real Estate Transactions

Purchasing, selling, or converting a property to rental use can have significant tax implications.

We help clients evaluate depreciation, capital gains, passive activity limitations, and the tax consequences of real estate transactions before important decisions are made.

Business Ownership & Entity Decisions

Starting a business, electing S corporation status, or changing how a business owner receives compensation can affect taxes for years.

We help business owners evaluate entity choices, compensation strategies, business deductions, and estimated tax obligations.

Multistate Residency & Relocation

Moving between states, working remotely, or maintaining homes in multiple states can create complicated residency and income-sourcing questions.

We help clients understand state filing obligations, residency considerations, and opportunities to avoid unnecessary double taxation.

Investments & Retirement Accounts

Investment sales, capital gains, retirement contributions, and distributions can affect taxable income in ways that are not always obvious.

We help clients evaluate the tax implications of investment decisions and coordinate tax strategies with their broader financial circumstances.

Military & Veteran Tax Considerations

Military retirement, disability benefits, PCS moves, and military spouse employment can introduce specialized federal and state tax issues.

We help military and veteran families evaluate these issues, including residency choices under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and tax considerations associated with military transitions.

How PIM Approaches Tax Planning

1. Understand Your Tax Situation

Effective planning begins with understanding your current circumstances. We review relevant information from your prior tax returns, income sources, investments, business activities, and anticipated financial changes.

This helps us identify the tax issues that deserve attention and establish a foundation for evaluating potential strategies.

2. Identify Planning Opportunities

We evaluate how applicable federal and state tax laws may affect your financial decisions.

Depending on your circumstances, this may involve retirement distributions, estimated tax payments, investment transactions, business structures, real estate decisions, or state residency considerations.

3. Evaluate Strategies and Alternatives

Tax planning often involves comparing several possible courses of action. We help you understand the potential tax consequences, limitations, and tradeoffs associated with each alternative.

Our objective is not simply to find the lowest immediate tax liability, but to help you make decisions that support your broader financial goals.

4. Implement and Monitor Your Plan

Once appropriate strategies have been identified, we help you understand the actions, documentation, and deadlines involved.

Depending on your service agreement, ongoing planning may include periodic reviews, updated tax projections, and adjustments when your financial circumstances or tax laws change.
